There’s been a great deal of interest in a recent report conducted by the US Department of Developmental Services that suggests a link between food allergies and Autism in children. Autism is growing at rapid levels in children around the world, with some 1 in every 100 children now being diagnosed with Autism by the age of five. Diet has long been know to have a direct affect on the development of children, so it should not come as a surprise that now scientists are recognizing that the chemicals we are adding to our food supply are causing more harm than good in the developmental processes of our children.

The study, conducted by the California Department of Development between 1987 to 2007, indicate that children who eat a diet composed of fast foods, saturated fats, sugars and artificial food additives, causing food alleriges, have a 25% chance of developing Autism. Learn more by reading the report here

http://www.dds.ca.gov/Autism/docs/5study_aims_4-6.pdf

There is hope, however, that we can turn things around for millions of families who want to raise healthy children. Thanks to food distributors like Healthy Home Foods in Charleston, South Carolina and the many other organic and natural food chains around the globe, we can stamp out problems like Autism, Obesity and Diabetes in the coming generation.

Every year parents spend hundreds if not thousands of dollars on toys and activities for their kids to keep them entertained during the holidays. While some things are great for keeping young minds and bodies active, many of them are unnecessary. Sure kids need structured play, but they also need “free” time to use their imaginations, enjoy fresh air and experience the joy of the holiday season. This is easy to do when the world’s largest playground is right outside your back door. Why not let them play outside?

Every toy, book, and TV show that comes out nowadays has been designed and redesigned several times in order to make them more educational and entertaining for children. The great thing about nature is that, while being entertaining and stimulating to the imagination, it’s also educational. Nature can teach children the basics of science, economics, and creativity. Here’s why you should let Mother Nature entertan the kids this holiday season.

It’s cheap. Depending on where you live, exploring nature is usually pretty inexpensive, if not free. It may mean going out in your backyard, local park, or perhaps going to the local nature center or state park (which usually have low cost fees or memberships). This way, you don’t have to pay for expensive toys, jungle gyms, or memberships to expensive entertainment centers, but you still get the benefit of stimulating and educational play.

It makes them think. Lately there’s been a trend in education towards inquiry based learning. Researchers have found that if students explore and experiment to figure out answers on their own, they’re going to learn better, and retain more information. It also helps them develop skills to be able to learn things on their own later. What better environment to learn things than out in nature. There are lessons for kids of all ages to discover about the world around them.

It may help the world. Everyone these days is trying to be more green and more environmentally conscious. What better way to help do your part than to get your children interested in their own planet than right now when they’re young and impressionable? What might be a fun time for them now, might be a future hobby, career, or world saving invention.

It’s fun. While it’s easy to forget, childhood isn’t just for learning about how to be an adult, it’s also about having fun. Nature gives kids a chance to use their imagination and be free to just be kids.

While unstructured play outside is great for kids, you can also find many places offering structured classes and learning sessions for kids that focus on the natural world. Check your local park, zoo, or museum. There’s a good chance they have classes you can sign up for, and since many of these places are not for profit, they’re usually affordable as well as informative.

Across the world, there are millions of dollars being spent to help promote sending your kids outside to learn from nature. That’s because spending time in the outside world is so important for developing minds. It can also be a great escape for you as well.

People often have different ideas when hearing the word “organic” in front of food labels. Healthy Home Foods defines organic food as being grown or raised without chemical pesticides or chemical fertilizers which makes them completely “organic.”

As a society, we’ve become so accustomed to getting by with foods that have been grown with fertilizers and that contain harmful toxins, that we’ve forgotten what it’s like to feel truly “well.” We don’t know how good we can really feel by eating healthy organic foods offered by healthy grocers and distributors like Healthy Home Foods.

Why would you choose to eat organic food? We pay a lot in terms of flavor and nutrition to eat perfect-looking food. Yes, organic food might have an occasional bruise on its flesh – but so does food that’s been sprayed with harmful chemicals. Organic foods are generally fresher and more flavorful. Many times, they’re grown locally, so they haven’t been stored or refrigerated. Consider the difference in flavor between a vine-ripened tomato and a regular tomato. There’s just no comparison.

The body has to process everything you put into it and eliminate what it cannot digest. If your food contains toxins in the form of chemical pesticides and fertilizers, your body has to figure out a way to get rid of the toxins. When the body cannot get rid of toxins fast enough, it stores them until it has time to eliminate them. This can lead to many health problems.

Many of the pesticides used in farming have been found to be carcinogenic. Reducing your exposure to these toxins can improve your health. True, some people eliminate toxins well. Still, the body needs to expend energy to eliminate toxins when it could be doing other things such as healing damaged cells, fighting off viruses and bacteria, or patrolling the body for cancer cells.

Even people who can tolerate or eliminate toxins can feel substantially better without putting these poisons into their bodies. And if your system is sensitive to toxins, you’ll be much better off eliminating them from your diet as much as possible. Fortunately, it’s easier to do this because there’s a greater selection and variety of organic produce available through the grocery delivery service at Healthy Home Foods.

We all want to do our part to protect the environment, but without a large paycheck, that can be seem difficult, if not impossible. But doing your part doesn’t have to be hard, or expensive. Small steps add up to a big difference, you just have to know which ones to take.

Use less water.

Saving water is all about small steps, here are a few that will help save big.

Shut off the water while you brush your teeth

Take showers that are a minute or two shorter

Only flush the toilet when you need to

Only run full loads of laundry and dishes

Buy from sustainable producers. These are farmers, ranchers, and other producers that use techniques that pollute less and use less water. You can do some research online or ask Healthy Home Foods to find these products.

Use less energy.

If you don’t have the money to buy a hybrid car or convert your house to solar power, you can make a big difference with small changes.

Buy energy efficient appliances. They may be more expensive, but make up for the increased cost in lower energy bills.

Unplug chargers when you’re not using them. Cell phone and other chargers use up powers even if there’s nothing attached to them.

Put devices with remotes, like T.V.s, VCRs, and stereos, on a power strip and turn it off when you’re not using them. These devices use a lot of power to run the remote receiver even when the device is off.

Walk or ride your bike for short trips.

Buy local products. It takes energy to transport food and other products across the country. Buying local not only supports your local economy, it helps them use less energy. Get yourgroceries delivered by Healthy Home Foods and use less gasoline and save time and money.

When it comes to saving energy and water, it’s a great idea to get the kids involved. You can even make it a game. Have them track how much water and electricity everyone is using. You can compete to see who uses the least water. You can often count on your kids to help keep you on track when given the task.

Reuse.

Most of us know the three R’s: reduce, reuse, recycle, but when we work on conserving, we often leave reuse out of the picture. While you can often find tips on how to reuse common products from other people, what you need most is creativity. With a little thought there are many items around your home that can be reused – toilet paper holders can be used to sow seeds for the vegetable patch. And old yogurt containers can be cut into strip to make plant labels. Old food jars can be refilled with homemade foods or can make great impromptu vases.

Use environmentally friendly products. When you go to the grocery store, you probably see more and more “natural” or “eco friendly” products every time. There are generally two big problems with these products: 1. Just because they’re more natural than regular products, doesn’t mean they’re entirely natural. 2, They’re often expensive.

If you want inexpensive, natural, safe products, why not just make them yourself. Vinegar is a great way to clean and disinfect glass and other surfaces. Need to remove stubborn stains? Just add some baking soda to your vinegar cleaner. Some quick searching online will lead you to hundreds of other natural safe home-made cleaning products.

Getting in shape and losing weight by eating healthy foods is on everyone’s minds nowadays.

Being able to look good for work, school and personal reasons is of utmost importance, but with so many people on the run it’s hard to fit nutrition into the average day. Luckily, eating healthy to lose weight is made easier by choosing foods that are organic and filled with the wholesome nutrients that a busy person needs to stay on track. Here are some natural food alternatives to help you eat healthier at home and on the go:

Fruits and Veggies

The Creator had convenience in mind when He invented fruits and vegetables. Not only are fruits and veggies a rich source of vitamins and nutrients – they come in their own easy to carry “packages” with outside skins designed to hold in all those lovely flavors and benefits. Grab a fresh piece of fruit or a bunch of carrots for a quick snack anytime of the day or evening. Keep fresh frozen veggies on hand for a healthful dinner at home with the family and weekends when the temptation to eat badly creeps in.

Meats and Proteins

Need a quick pick me up anytime for long last energy? Instead of getting addicted to caffeine and energy drinks, why not choose a healthy alternative of some organic peanut butter or natural meat jerky? Or include a protein in your morning breakfast like bison sausage or turkey bacon. Protein is something that every human needs to keep the energy levels going strong. Instead of filling up on carbs in the morning, try adding some protein in to help burn calories faster and lose weight.

Whole Grains

It’s easy to head for the nearest fast food restaurant or vending machine when hunger strikes, but it’s hard to find anything that includes the wholesome goodness of natural grains. Instead, make a sandwich from whole grain bread or a pita and fill it with hummus, veggies or low fat meats for a great alternative to the burger. You will feel better, your weight will be easier to maintain and you will experience more regularity which will keep toxins from building up in your body.

Eating healthier isn’t hard when you have the convenience of healthy foods and groceries in your home pantry. Buy your groceries affordably from Healthy Home Foods and enjoy meals at home anytime and make ahead lunches and snacks that appeal to any pallet – and help you to lose weight.

Recently, an alarming study was published establishing the negative link between BPA and the reproductive health of young women and girls around the globe.

Bisphenol A, more commonly referred to as BPA, is a hormone-disrupting chemical that is used in hard plastics like consumer packages, baby products, clear water bottles and food storage containers. It’s been lurking for quite some time until the Environmental Protection Agency concluded that it was harmful to humans, particularly those in the developmental stages of life.

However, only five states in the USA have banned its use, despite it being shown to appear in over 90% of urine samples taken from average Americans in an independent study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control. BPA is harmful in that it mimics estrogen in the body, causing irregularities in hormone levels in females and males.

So for those families’ not eating organic foods or using hard plastic baby bottles, drink cups and containers – the affects are already starting to show in the alarming rate of young girls who are experiencing puberty at much faster rates. According to the recent story which aired on Fox News in August “Research has found the chemical can leach into food and beverages when containers are heated and could pose a health risk at extremely low exposure levels, especially to infants and young children. There have been more than 200 published studies linking BPA to a number of medical problems including breast and prostate cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, childhood obesity, neurological problems in infants and young children, early puberty, and immune and sexual dysfunction.” (http://health.blogs.foxnews.com/2010/07/29/efforts-to-ban-chemical-bpa-picks-up-momentum/) Girls are maturing as young as 8 years old and young women are heading into menopause in their early forties; at much earlier rates as a result of harmful chemicals found in our nation’s food sources.

So what can the average family do to prevent damage to their reproductive health?

First, let’s start with not purchasing foods that come in BPA laden containers and don’t store or serve foods in hard plastic containers – choose glass or other natural materials instead. That goes for baby products as well. Containers that say “BPA free” should be your first choice.

Second, choose only natural and organic foods that are prepared without the use of chemicals, hormones or BPA packaging for the ultimate in health benefits.

Third, demand that grocers take down any products that come in BPA containers and ask for organic alternatives instead. Remember, it’s up to you to make sure that your health is preserved and that your children grow up the way nature intended.

Summertime is the perfect time to try some of the all natural meats that Healthy Home Foods sells. While they are delicious on their own, adding a marinade or dressing made from natural ingrediants adds the final touch to any meal. Here are some tips for using marinades for summertime delight with your Healthy Home Foods products:
Grilling marinade will be made of three basic ingredients; Oils, Acids, and Seasonings. These three categories are the beginning of a grilling recipe that you create. Oils will not penetrate meat, they’ll simply coat the surface. However, many of the most flavorful oils have low temperature “smoke points”, not the best choice for the grill so they are not always the best choice when cooking natural meats.

Acids and seasonings will dictate the flavor of your grilling marinade. Acids are used because of their ability to tenderize items. This is largely overstated, though. Acids have a SLIGHT tenderizing effect, but not enough to make a big difference in your grilling marinade. The acids most effective at tenderizing tough cuts of meat are from tropical fruits like mango and papaya, but most often tomato products, vinegar, wine, or soy sauce are used.

Choosing the right cut of meat to marinate is the most important step. A cup of ketchup in a marinade will not make a tough cut of meat magically tender. Don’t expect your grilling marinade to turn tough beef into filet mignon, it won’t happen. Acids will break down connective tissues, but it’s the intense direct heat of the barbeque grill that will toughen and dry meats quickly. That’s why it’s important to choose a tender cut of meat to grill, because the cooking method of grilling won’t tenderize your item, regardless of which grilling marinade you choose.

The general rules of marinating Healthy Home Foods meats are easy:

1) Longer = Stronger. The longer you marinate something, the stronger the flavor

2) Thicker = Longer. The thicker the product, the longer you’ll need to marinate it.

3) Tender = Shorter. A tender product will not need to be marinated as long.

4) Cooler = Cooler. ALWAYS marinate under refrigeration to keep bacteria growth down.

5) Acid resistant container = No Brainer. ALWAYS marinate in plastic or glass, never in copper or reactive metals.

A grilling marinade is perfectly matched for a dry cooking process like grilling. The marinade will add flavor and moisture for the quick, intense heat of the barbeque grill. You can create your own complex flavors of oils, acids and seasonings and invent the latest grilling marinade.
